I ran a very small consumer insight survey (primarily my non-marketing drinking buddies) and asked them what comes to mind when they hear the word “advertisement.” Some responses that I received were: a cheery jingle inviting you to eat fast food, talking animals with trustworthy smiles promising to save you money, and if you purchase the newest shiniest vehicle you will have to fend off all the beautiful women that want you. If you’re in the marketing industry you problem start thinking about budget, assets needed, timeline, and target market. There are certain campaign themes that tend to rise to the top as the most commonly used. They are commonly used because they activate certain mental heuristics within our target markets that get them to self-identify and pushes them closer to the purchase decision. These themes primarily focus around comedy, luxury, wealth, and accomplishment. All very general themes that large groups can associate with (whether in actuality or as their idealized persona) and focus around common products that are relatively hard to differentiate by the general consumer. The question is, what happens when those advertisements aren’t for something common?
Clever persuasive writing and advertising, according to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, can be divided into three categories: logos, ethos, and pathos. These categories, referred to as Aristotle’s Appeals, make the most effective advertisements out there. Logos refers to logic, the clarity of the claim. Appealing to common sense, logos is what makes us believe a campaign. Ethos brings ethics and credibility of the author, playing on how much you trust the speaker. For example, using a famous quote or mentioning the views of someone trusted in an article automatically makes it twice as credible. Pathos takes into consideration the emotions of the audience, trying to evoke feelings of sympathy and passion towards a specific topic. Think of animal adoption agencies showing commercials with sad puppy eyes.
Just as the market leaders of today have utilized Aristotle’s Appeals for their benefit (of course using modern terminology – such as Social Currency, Triggers, etc…) so have activist groups. Playing on your feelings and common sense, ads for awareness of pressing social issues continue to inspire us and make the world think just a little bit harder.
